Amniocentesis is a procedure whereby a small quantity (20-30 ml) of amniotic fluid (that surrounds the fetus) is removed by using a thin needle and syringe through the wall of the abdomen. This procedure is performed by the obstetrician gynecologist to the 16th week of pregnancy. Its main indications are advanced maternal age (over 35) or antenatal screening test that assesses that a similar or higher than the maternal age. The cells collected from amniotic fluid can identify chromosomal abnormalities (eg trisomy 21) and in some cases specific molecular abnormalities and / or biochemical (eg sickle cell anemia, cystic fibrosis). The biopsy is performed under sterile ultrasound guidance. It is painless and takes only a few minutes. Some uterine cramping may occur following this procedure and, rarely, bleeding or loss of amniotic fluid through the vagina.
